After glaciers, where do you find the next largest source of fresh water?
Ground water.
What percentage of the world's water is locked up in glaciers?
About 2%
What is the process called of turning from a gas state back into a liquid state?
Condensation
What is meant by the term water quantity?
The amount of water. (how much)
What is water quality?
The characteristics of water that make it suitable or unsuitable. (how good it is)
What are the large scratches caused by glaciers that drag rocks over other rocks called?
Striations
1 - Horn
2 - Arete
3 - Cirque
What is a large ridge of material left behind by a glacier?
Moraine.
What is an erractic?
A large rock or boulder left behind by a glacier.
What is meant by deposition?
Material that is left behind by a glacier or moving water.
What is the water table?
The top of the ground water. (which can change depending on rainfall, drought conditions etc)
What would be examples of point source contamination?
Sewage being dumped, leaking gas tanks, chemical spills.
What is permeable rock?
Rock and soil that have large spaces that allows water to pass through them and collect.
What is the system of water underground that is flowing through porous rock called?
An aquifer.
What is a major environmental concern with building a dam?
Flooding of a large portion of land to create a reservoir.
What is the main cause of waves or swells?
The wind.
What happens when the crest of a wave outruns the trough?
A breaker forms
What is a sea cave?
A sea cave forms when erosion occurs in rocks due to wind and water.
What is the main cause of the tides in our oceans?
The moon's gravity (the Sun's gravity also plays a role)
What are three factors that can influence the direction of the winds and surface currents?
The uneven heating of our Earth, the rotation of the Earth and the continents.
What happens to oxygen levels in water when the water temperature rises?
The oxygen levels will decrease.
What are some problems with turbidity?
The turbid (cloudy) water will block sunlight from entering water, thus slowing photosynthesis of water plants. Also can prevent certain organisms from seeing their prey underwater.
Name and explain one adaptation of an aquatic organism.
I really hope you can think of at least one - there are thousands of answers.
What is the concern with phosphates from fertilizers getting into our water (and since they are good for plants)
Phosphates will cause the alga to grow quickly and their population will increase causing a nice green slimy layer on water systems. Then they die and it needs more than the normal amount of bacteria to decompose them and these bacteria will use up the oxygen quickly.
What is biomagnification?
The buildup of poisons as you go up the food chain.
What is effluent?
Treated waste water.
What is acid precipitation?
When gases in the air mix with rain or snow and fall back to the ground.
What is the term given to water that is safe to drink?
Potable water.
What is the reason we should not dump soaps, oils etc down the storm drains in the street?
The storm drains led directly to the river so it will not be treated first.
What are the steps used to clean water before you drink it?
Filter large particles; add chemicals to clean; let water move through a filter and then add chlorine to kill bugs (and even flouride)
