This branch of geography primarily focuses on landforms and geological processes.
What is physical geography?
The exact coordinates of a place on Earth are known as this type of location.
What is absolute location?
When you describe where your school is by saying it's "near the park, two blocks from the library," you're using this type of location.
What is relative location?
This theme of geography describes the flow of people, goods, ideas, and information across Earth's surface.
What is Movement?
This theme of geography examines how humans adapt to, modify, and depend on their surroundings.
What is Human-Environment Interaction?
What is the map key (or legend)?
This map feature shows cardinal directions and helps you know which way is north.
What is the compass rose?
You use this map feature to estimate distances between two places.
What is the map scale?
This type of map would be ideal for a hiker exploring nature trails because it shows elevation and terrain.
What is a topographic map?
This type of map projection was designed to minimize distortion of landmasses.
What is the Goode Homolosine, Winkel Tripel, or equal-area projection?
The line of 0° longitude that goes through this city.
What is Greenwich (or London), England?
This parallel line of 0° latitude goes around the middle of the Earth.
What is the equator?
This type of region has clearly defined boundaries and specific characteristics — like a country or state.
What is a formal region?
This type of region is based on people's feelings, attitudes, or perceptions about a place — like "the South" or "the Midwest."
What is a perceptual region?
A pizza shop's delivery zone is an example of this type of region, organized around a central point or function.
What is a functional region?
This biome receives very high rainfall, has dense vegetation, and is found near the equator.
What is the tropical rainforest?
This major climate zone is very cold and found in Antarctica and in the Arctic Circle.
What is a Polar Climate?
This stage of the water cycle occurs when the sun heats surface water and it turns into water vapor.
What is evaporation?
When water vapor cools and forms clouds, this stage of the water cycle is occurring.
What is condensation?
This biome is characterized by extremely cold temperatures, little precipitation, and low-lying vegetation.
What is the tundra?
Hurricane Katrina forcing thousands of New Orleans residents to flee Louisiana is an example of this.
What is an environmental push factor?
This is defined as the shared patterns of behaviors, beliefs, and values passed down from one generation to the next.
What is culture?
When K-pop music spreads from South Korea to fans around the world, this geographic concept is taking place.
What is cultural diffusion?
In this type of economic system, the government controls the entire economy.
What is a command economy?
The United States is this type of economy because it blends free market principles with some government regulation and social services.
What is a mixed economy?
The overwhelming majority of Earth's water is this type.
What is saltwater?
This deep, narrow valley with steep sides is often carved by river erosion.
What is a canyon?
Mountains are typically formed by this process.
What is the collision of tectonic plates?
This body of water, located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, is the country's largest estuary.
What is the Chesapeake Bay?
This type of plate boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move apart from each other.
What is a divergent plate boundary?
